SOLD OUT - Grow Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms: A Four Part Cultivation Lab Series

  • 20 Jay Street Brooklyn, NY 11201 (map)

All sessions are full. If you’re interested in attending a future Lab Series, please get in touch

In this mushroom cultivation lab series, you will learn to grow gourmet and medicinal mushrooms from scratch using simple, low cost, high yield cultivation techniques.

We will meet every other week for 4 sessions starting March 20 to go through the entire cultivation process and get as much hands-on as possible. You will learn to generate cultures from live mushrooms, produce large quantities of mushroom mycelium (also known as "spawn"), and build grow kits for fruiting mushrooms. We will start with Blue Oyster mushrooms and have opportunities to work with the medicinals such as Lions Mane and Turkey Tail. By the time when we finish up in May, you will have the knowledge and skills to hit the ground cultivating mushrooms on your own.

Previous experience is not required. It's all about getting your hands dirty (or...clean indeed) and learning!

March 20, Wed, 6:30pm | Generate mother culture from live mushrooms (Lab Series 1/4)
In this session, you will learn how to generate mother culture from live mushrooms. The mother culture is *the* start point that allows cultivators to grow an endless supply of mushrooms. We will work with cultivated Blue Oyster mushrooms in this workshop. If you have a mushroom you've grown or bought from a store that you want to culture, just bring it along! We will also discuss how to set up a DIY lab at home.

April 3, Wed, 6:30pm | Make Liquid Culture (Lab Series 2/4)
In this session, you will learn how to make liquid culture from the mother culture generated in the last session. Working with liquid culture is cost effective and allows cultivators to produce large quantities of mycelium (also known as "spawn") in open air or even over the kitchen counter at home. It is considered a revolutionary improvement over labor intensive and more traditional methods for expanding mycelium.

April 17, Wed, 6:30pm | Produce Grain Spawn (Lab Series 3/4)
In this session, you will learn how to make grain spawn or the mushrooms "seeds". By the end of this workshop, you will walk away with a grain spawn jar, which you can use to expand 10x on bulk substrate for fruiting mushrooms, or exponentially increase your cultivation productivity by producing more grain spawn / sawdust spawn / plug spawn. The possibilities are endless!

May 1, Wed, 6:30pm | Build Grow Kit (Lab Series 4/4)
In this session, we will learn how to prepare substrate and build mushroom grow kits for fruiting fresh mushrooms. We will also discuss how to set up proper environment for the fruiting phase. By the end of this workshop, you will bring home a mushroom grow kit and in a few weeks harvest fresh mushrooms you've grown from scratch!

May 15, Wed, 6:30pm | Troubleshooting & FAQs
We will wrap up the four part mushroom cultivation lab series with a troubleshooting discussion. As a mushroom cultivator, I tend to think this type of discussions and reflections are the most valuable part of our learning process as we experiment and develop our hands-on skills.
