Fun with Fungi: Growing Mushrooms in the Classroom

  • Community Roots Charter School 51 Saint Edwards Street Brooklyn, NY, 11205 United States (map)

Fungi are incredible organisms that can grow in different environments, remediate soils, break down waste products, create sustainable building materials, and of course grow culinary mushrooms. In this workshop, we’ll learn about the fungi life-cycle, examine different case studies of what mushrooms can do and be used for, learn to identify some varieties of mushrooms, and build our own mushroom spawn blocks using in low tech cultivation methods. We also want to hear from you about how you can connect classroom mushrooms to your curricula. Participants will bring home a mushroom grow kit which will develop over the next 2-3 weeks. Bring a bag or a box to carry home your kit.

This workshop is free and open to all public school teachers.
